On October 16, 2020, a national key research and development plan project initiation and special research meeting was successfully held in Quzhou, Zhejiang, led by Professor Fan Shunwu from Zhejiang Run Run Run Run Hospital and led by Zhejiang University. Guo Wei, Deputy Researcher and Dr. Liu Ze from the Medical Biotechnology Department of the China Biotechnology Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, visited to guide the work. Cao Huafen, Director of the Social Development Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Zheng Zhicheng, Director of the Quzhou Science and Technology Bureau, Cao Zengjin, Deputy Dean of Ke Yuehai from the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University, and Yu Yunsong, Deputy Dean of the Shaw Hospital affiliated with the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University, as well as the project leaders and research backbone, attended the meeting, The kickoff meeting was chaired by Professor Fan Shunwu from Run Run Run Shaw Hospital.
Before the meeting, experts including deputy researcher Guo Wei, Dr Liu Ze, director Cao Huafen, director Zheng Zhicheng, director Cao Zengjin and Professor Fan Shunwu visited the exhibition hall of Zhejiang Pfluon Long New Materials Co. , Ltd. . Chairman Wang Ximing introduced the operation of the company and explained the application fields and material properties of polyether ether ketone, at present, the material has been applied to aerospace, nuclear power, military, high-end equipment core components, oil exploitation and other fields. The group also visited the PEMBERLONG polyether ether ketone synthesis workshop. The company's annual production of 800 tons of high-purity polyether ether ketone technology transformation project has been approved by the Quzhou City Economic and Trade Bureau, at present, the project has entered the design and construction of pre-preparation stage.
At the meeting, Vice President Ke Yuehai delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the school, warmly congratulating the convening of the project kickoff meeting, and expressing sincere gratitude to the Medical Biotechnology Department for its support to our school and the project. Vice President Yu Yunsong of Shaw Hospital introduced the scientific research achievements of Professor Fan Shunwu's team in orthopedics in recent years, congratulated on this project application, and wished the project a smooth implementation. Associate Researcher Guo Wei from the Medical Biotechnology Department introduced the original intention and implementation of the national key research and development plan "Research and Development of Biomedical Materials and Replacement of Tissue and Organs" special project, and requested each research group to strengthen communication, cooperate fully, and complete research and development work on time, with the project leading unit as the center. Subsequently, Director Zheng Zhicheng of the Quzhou Science and Technology Bureau delivered a speech on behalf of the Quzhou Municipal Government, welcoming all expert leaders to the meeting. At the same time, he introduced the development characteristics of Quzhou, thanked the Medical Department for its support of the project, and expressed that he would organize and manage the project implementation well, playing a supervisory role. Director Cao Huafen of the Social Development Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology stated that we will strictly comply with relevant regulations such as the "Interim Measures for the Management of National Key R&D Plans" and the "Measures for the Management of National Key R&D Plan Funds", actively play the role of organization, coordination, service, and supervision, ensure the smooth implementation of projects and high-quality completion of R&D tasks.
At the meeting, Professor Fan Shunwu, the project leader, first introduced the background significance and research objectives of the project. In response to the high dependence on imports of polyaryletherketones as surgical medical materials, it is urgent to develop domestically produced high-performance medical raw materials and implant devices suitable for the anatomical characteristics of Chinese people. The difficulty in purification and purification of medical poly (aryl ether ketone), lack of mass production equipment, and low osteogenic activity of implants are important factors that restrict localization. The project is based on interdisciplinary hotspots such as chemistry, material engineering, and clinical medicine, conducting full chain research, developing medical grade PEEK, high osteogenic activity M-PAEK, and high-strength PEK, developing intervertebral fusion cages with excellent bone integration, intelligent artificial vertebral bodies, sports medicine anchors, and conducting clinical trials. Subsequently, the leaders of each project reported on the specific implementation plan and research goal decomposition and division of labor for each project. The attending leaders and experts carefully reviewed the project implementation plan, expressed overall affirmation of the implementation plan, and proposed some practical and feasible improvement suggestions for the specific details of the technical route, assisting the project team in improving the research plan and technical route。
The national key research and development plan "Key Technologies for Mass Production of Medical Polyaryletherketone Materials and Research and Development of Surface Biomimetic Modification Technology for Orthopedic Implants" project is led by Zhejiang University, which has collaborated with Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University of Technology Zhejiang Kehui Medical Instrument Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Pengfulong New Material Co., Ltd., six top domestic high science universities and high-tech companies, as project responsible units and participating units, have formed a school enterprise joint team with chemical engineering, biomaterials, biological manufacturing, and clinical medicine backgrounds and distinctive "interdisciplinary", relying on three State Key Laboratory and one biomaterial research and testing center recognized by NMPA. The total project budget is 37.98 million yuan, of which 7.98 million yuan is funded by the central government. The implementation period is two years, and the expected results include the development of three new types of medical polyether ketones and the construction of a medical grade PEEK production line with an annual production capacity of 2 tons. Develop a new technology for biomimetic periosteal cross scale and multi-layer PEEK surface modification to obtain implanted instruments with good bone healing properties. Develop at least one intervertebral fusion cage, intelligent artificial vertebral body, and sports medicine anchor product that meets the registration standards for three types of products, and enter clinical trials. Obtained 11-12 invention patents.
